These slipring clutches are powered by a slipring brush that looks something similar to a normal auto spark plug in construction. They can also be of a ''caliper type'' especially on machines from the UK. The function of these brushes is to supply, usually 24 volt DC power to the clutch while the clutch is rotating. Non Slipring clutches & Brakes:
Also known as ''Stationary Field'' clutches, they are manufactured by Dessau DDR, ETM, Matrix, ZF, EK, Stromag, Ortlinghaus, Binder, Heid, PSP, Baruffaldi, Corbetta, Tourco, Warner, Ogura, Mitsubishi, Shinko, Goizper, Monninghoff, Croft, Siemens, Sodetra, EKR, ELN, ERD, EMB.A, EFL, KLDO, EK, Siemens. These have an internal bearing arrangement to allow the clutch component to rotate, while the ''magnetic coil'' is stationary.
Both these type of clutch units are used in many machine applications for speed and feed selection. These multi-disc clutches and brakes are available & are normally used for oil lubricated environments (wet) and can be supplied with a torque carrying capacity of 0.8 kgm to 320 kgm. Typical applications for this type of Dry Clutch or brake would be as a primary drive or braking system between the motor source and the drive gearbox. These types of clutch construction usually consist of a combination of multiple plates of special heat treated steel, combined with a combination of organic or non-asbestos synthetic material plates. They are available in single plate units or multiple plate units; much favored in the packaging, textile, printing, food processing, book making, wood processing and special purpose machine industries.
At Keith Price, we can offer a wide range of dry type single disc or multi disc clutch and brake units in a variety of torque ratings in both 'stand alone' or clutch brake combination sets that are exchangeable & compatible with other similar units from other manufacturers.
Typical torque rating we are able to offer would be from 10Nm to 10000 Nm for multi plate units and 3Nm to 2500 Nm for single plate units.
Our single plate ''dry'' clutch and brake units are without slipring and are rated as zero backlash, using a simple construction design & little on going maintenance. Micro clutches are available from 0.3 Nm to 3Nm

General information:
The Telescopic Brushes are required for good transfer of electrical current to the clutch slipring. The above brushes are suitable for ''wet application'' (runs in oil) and can be used in a 24 volt DC supply. They are designed to give good transfer of electrical supply to the clutch slipring despite the presence of an oil film. To ensure satisfactory power supply to the clutch, the special ''wire type brush'' insert should be pressure loaded enabling it to penetrate the oil film and give a good contact. If this is not achieved, burning of the slipring is imminent, resulting in the clutch being rendered non functional.
''Dummy brushes'' are sometimes used (these are the same as normal brushes, but are not connected to a power source). The reason some manufacturers use these ''Dummy brushes'' is to provide an oil wiping action for the brush that delivers the power supply, especially when slipring velocities exceed 10 M/second.
Proper installation with minimum vibration is essential for long life of the brush. The brush should be secured directly into the machine casting or a strong support bracket, rigid enough to prevent any vibration. The brushes should be connected to the positive pole of the 24 volt DC supply. The life of the brush will be substantially reduced if the power supply is connected to the negative pole (earth), or if the negative pole has a poor connection.

Brush construction wet operation:
The telescopic brush is made up of a screw body of the size stated in each type. The brush insert is so designed that its construction has an inner & outer brush, performing a good wiping action & ensuring a good contact. Secondly the outer and inner brush are designed to have different natural frequencies in order to ensure this good contact in the presence of vibration, because only one brush at a time can be in resonance, resulting in a prolonged brush life.
Brush construction dry operation:
Current supply brushes for dry operation have a special carbon compound insert. It is essential to prevent oil and grease from the slipring and slipring brush if the clutch is to perform satisfactory.
Both the long and the short versions are available and there are different designs to suit all applications. Dummy brushes are not required in dry applications.

Electromagnetic Fail-safe Brakes:
These units are available in AC or DC supply with a simple air gap & torque adjustment operating system, resulting in a very low wear rate or operation. These units have an Asbestos free dual surface friction lining, giving a stable and rugged unit with they can be equipped with an optional accessory for a manual release.
Typical applications could be material handling equipment such as hoists, cranes & textile machinery.
Electromagnetic Spring applied holding brakes:
These units are a very reliable and safe in operation, giving a low wear rate of operation, due to the unit’s surface hardened armature disc friction elements. They are manufactured to class 4 insulation in torque rating from 1 Nm to 160 Nm. for servo motors & up to 400 Nm for other applications.
Typical applications would in conjunction of all servo motors, packaging and medical machinery, & automation equipment such as robotic units
Permanent Magnet Clutches and Brakes:
Used in dry operation, they give a very high level of backlash free reliability. These Permanent Magnetic clutches and Brakes give optimum constant torque at high operating temperatures. Typical applications would be in electric motors, especially servo motors. Torque 2 Nm- 160 Nm.
Electromagnetic Wrap-string Clutches and Brakes:
These specialist units give very high accurate poisoning with a high torque to size ration, resulting in very quick response times with no adjustments necessary for the unit’s life span. The units are controlled by heavy duty solenoid coils giving total reliability in the operation of the unit.
Electromagnetic clutches used in the textile industry:
Electromagnetic clutch & brake drives for textile weaving looms are custom developed for accurate control of ''Pick Finders'', in modern Rapier Looms. They are excellent for the ''slow motion'' control of ''Jacquard Dobby'' & Jacquard motion. Very high torque for their small dimensions operation at vibration free, very low noise and can tolerate temperatures up to 150 deg C.
These units were specially designed for modern high speed Wearing Rapier Looms that can be possibly used on Air-Jet & Water Jet Looms. Available in torque ratings from 180 Nm to 1400 Nm.
Electromagnetic Compressor Clutches:
Self cleaning, and maintenance free operation for the control of air conditioning in modern day automobiles, such as busses, passenger cars, trucks, tractors & any other wheeled or tracked vehicles
Electromagnetic Fan clutches:
These units are a low cost clutch for all sizes of engines, giving benefits such as economic fuel consumption, increasing engine life and controlling pollution levels etc. Custom manufactured units are available to suit most engines as used in buses and trucks. Torque 70 Nm to 460 Nm are available.
Mechanical Multi Disc Torque Limiters:
These torque limiter clutches are low maintenance, low wearing with a clutch plate material of both steel on steel or sintered bronze on steel construction available. Upon application, we can offer special versions with sensors and electronics that give very accurate results, and can be operated via remote control.
These systems are especially used in the pharmaceutical industry, packaging machinery, fabric and paper material processing machinery & food processing machinery environment etc.
Our standard versions that are available on application are 10 Nm to 300 Nm, but are manufactured up to 30000 Nm in torque.

These mechanical operated clutch and brake disc units are also available in single plate operation. These are used in heavy duty applications, & have a very high heat dissipation, frequently used in such applications as in the braking or driving of very high masses. Electromagnetic Tooth Clutches
|

Sometimes known as serrated tooth clutches. Used in applications where extreme torque is required such as feed mechanisms, & on some CNC machines within the turret tool changer system. These units are manufactured in a range of torques from 20 Nm- 100000 Nm.
These Tooth clutches can be operated in both 'wet & 'dry applications, the construction comprising of a 'potted coil creating a magnetic flux when power activated. Engagement is via a nitride steel tooth ring and a similar material manufactured armature disc. Springs are often used to ensure that 2 tooth components are kept apart when the clutch is de- energized. Most of these clutches operated on 24 Volt DC power, but on application can be supplied on other options.
They are available in Slipring or Non Slipring types
A point of good practice is to ensure that no speed differential should be evident while the tooth clutch is being engaged, except where there are torsionally flexible elements on the input and output drives. In which case slight speed differential is permitted.
The tooth profile is available in many configurations, such as 'saw tooth clockwise' , 'saw tooth anti clockwise', 'overload tooth form', 'spaced tooth form', 'Stepped tooth clockwise', 'stepped tooth anti clockwise', & 'self locking' these can be discussed on application, however the most common types found in machine tool applications are the 'standard' or 'standard backlash free'
Depending on the clutch type required, they are available with a vas array of bore sizes and types from plain bore to spline bore in Slipring models, and face mounting holes in non slipring models.
These special clutches are used in very large milling machines, lathes and boring mills such as Asqith Floor Borers, Makino CNC Machining Centers, Poreba Lathes & Sachman Bed Mills etc.,
